Start with 3 days, build toward a week

Japan's Cabinet Office recommends stockpiling at least 3 days - ideally one week - of water and food for large-scale disasters, with drinking water estimated at 3 liters per person per day. This checklist applies those figures automatically to the household size and duration you select. The numbers can look daunting, but nobody builds a stockpile in one shopping trip: start with 3 days, add toward a week at the next sale.

A one-month stockpile anticipates wide-area disasters - like a Nankai Trough earthquake - where logistics take long to recover. Storage space becomes the real constraint at that scale; see the Stockpile Quantity Guide for how to think about amounts and storage.

The easiest way to maintain any of this is to stop treating it as special shopping: buy a little extra of the everyday food you already eat and rotate through it. That is the rolling stock method.

Official simulators also exist - Tokyo's "Tokyo Bichiku Navi" is a good example - and pair well with this checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How many days should a stockpile cover?

Japan's Cabinet Office recommends at least 3 days, ideally one week. Start with 3 days.

How much water per person?

The standard guide is 3 liters per person per day for drinking and cooking. This list calculates it for you.

Can I print this list?

Yes. The Print button outputs just the checklist in an A4-friendly layout.

Where should I store it all?

Spread it out - kitchen, closets, the car - rather than one spot. In flood-prone areas, store higher up.

Managing expiry dates sounds exhausting.

Keep extra of the everyday food you already eat and restock as you consume it - rolling stock all but eliminates expiry waste.

How many gas canisters do I need?

Burn time varies by product and temperature, so check the label and stock generously. Winter use runs higher.

What about toilets during a water outage?

Emergency toilet bags are essential. The common guide is 5 uses per person per day, multiplied by your days.

Is a one-month stockpile realistic?

Yes, if built around everyday staples like rice, dried noodles and canned food. See the quantity guide for details.
